One of Suffolk’s footballing legends has lent his support to the EADT’s campaign backing Bury Town.

Former Ipswich Town and England defender Kevin Beattie described the west Suffolk club as one of the county’s best in the week the club’s cashflow troubles came to light.

However, a campaign spearheaded by the EADT and its sister paper the Bury Mercury has already seen a dramatic turnaround in fortunes, with two of the town’s pubs joining calls for supporters to pack-out Ram Meadow this weekend for Bury’s home game against Thamesmead Town.

Mr Beattie, who played against Bury Town for Harwich & Parkeston in the twilight of his career, said: “It’s a great club, one of the biggest and best in non-league in the area.

“When I went there they always made you feel welcome. The fans always used to turn up in force, and three quarters of them were Ipswich fans.

“It’s a shame to hear what’s going on down there, but like all the clubs at that level they need the support. It’s good for the community if the local football club is doing well.”

A number of high-profile players have left the club in recent weeks due to club’s problems off the pitch, but form on the pitch remains good with the club having gone through December unbeaten.

Plus, things are looking up for Bury off the pitch, with local pubs The Masons Arms and The Woolpack also backing the Blues.

This week the club also confirmed the appointment of its new commercial team of Dan Bush and Clive Boughton to drive sponsorship activities, while it has already started selling plenty of half-season tickets, with more expected to be sold today

Chairman Russell Ward said last night: “The reaction we’ve had has been quite overwhelming. The amount of support we’ve had from all quarters, from supporters and local businesses and even rival teams, has been amazing.

“Being totally honest, we wish we weren’t in this situation, but if something good can come out of it and continue until the end of the season, then it’s good for the club.”

Today’s game kicks off at Ram Meadow at 3pm.
