A west Suffolk supermarket has confirmed it is open this morning following a fire last night, which saw customers and people living in the flats above evacuated.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said three of its crews were called to the Tesco Express in Lawson Place, Bury St Edmunds at 7.52pm yesterday.

The area was cordoned off and flats above the store were evacuated while crews tackled the fire, SFRS said.

Firefighters isolated the mains electricity supply to the store. Officers with breathing apparatus to monitored the situation and found a fire under one of the fridges in the store. They were able to put it out with an extinguisher. The ambulance service had been called to treat several people for smoke inhalation.

This morning, a member of staff confirmed the store was “open as usual”.

“It’s another regular day for us,” he added.
