The attack occurred in the early hours of this morning, between 4am and 4.15am, in Cullum Road.

The victim – a 25-year-old woman – was walking back from the town centre, when she was pushed into some bushes near a stream and sexually assaulted.

She screamed out for help and two women came to her assistance, resulting in the offender running away.

The suspect is described as being of mixed race, around 5ft 7in tall, of slim build and with dark hair, which was shaved on the sides and spikey on top. He was wearing a white hooded top and ripped skinny jeans. The victim believes he is Eastern European.

Detectives are currently treating this as an isolated incident, but would like to appeal to people to avoid walking home alone in the early hours of the morning and to stay in groups, or arrange to get a lift home or a taxi where possible.

It is the second serious sexual assault in west Suffolk in less than a week, following the rape of an 18-year-old in Sudbury on bank holiday Monday.

Anyone with information about the Bury St Edmunds incident should call west CID at Bury St Edmunds police station on 101 quoting reference 30248/18, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Today we can finally reveal the names of the people selected to be on our first ever Inspiring Women of Suffolk list.

This is a list that Suffolk should be proud of - 100 women who are positive role models for future generations, women who have achieved success in a diverse range of fields from business, the arts, sport and education to the third sector.

The list was put together by a panel of judges this summer after we asked readers for their nominations.
