ONE of Suffolk’s top resorts is stepping up its battle against the threat of national chain stores by celebrating its independent traders.

Earlier this week the EADT reported how shopkeepers in Aldeburgh had vowed to fight against becoming a “clone town”, with both Tesco and Boots looking to open up for business.

Traders have organised an “Independents Day” to encourage people to shop locally- promising discounts and offers for shoppers.

The event, which is set to take place on July 4, coincides with a national initiative and visitors and residents alike will be asked to buy at least one item from an independent retailer.

The day has been organised by Sue Fletcher, from ladies fashion boutique Caramel, and Claire Bruce-Clayton, of Lawson’s Delicatessen, with support from the Aldeburgh Business Association and the Heritage Coast Market Towns Initiative.

Ms Fletcher said: “Research suggests that a pound spent in a local business stays in the local economy for five more transactions, whereas a pound spent in a national business lasts just two.

“We want people to enjoy the charm and individuality of Aldeburgh. If the High Street was identical to elsewhere then people would stop coming.

“Hopefully by encouraging people to visit and support us it is a step towards safeguarding the future of the High Street.

“However it’s about more than just this one day. We are here 52 weeks a year. I would encourage everyone to come down and meet the business owners and see what we are all about.”

The event will be officially opened at 10am by Lady Caroline Cranbrook, who is a staunch supporter of independent stores.

Shoppers will also find mini master classes where they can learn skills ranging from styling an outfit for a special occasion or making a flower decoration, to how to joint a chicken and make pastry.

There promises to be a celebratory atmosphere, with music, balloons and competitions, including a prize for an overnight stay in a Best of Suffolk holiday cottage with a Lawson’s breakfast hamper.

Visitors will also be able to take advantage of discounts and special “Independents Day” menus in the restaurants.

Meanwhile, Ermintrude, a 1929 vintage bus supplied by Buckland Buses, will be running a shuttle between the residential areas of Aldeburgh and the High Street.
