There was brisk bidding for Sir Alf Ramsey memorabilia at Clarke & Simpson’s retro auction today.
There was brisk bidding, both in the room and on the internet, at Clarke & Simpson’s Suffolk auction room when a collection of memorabilia from football legend Sir Alf Ramsey went under the hammer today.
The items, from the estate of Lady Ramsey, included souvenirs presented to the Ipswich Town and England manager over his career - and his appointment letter received from the Football Association in 1962.
Auctioneer Hayden Foster said: “It was my favourite lot. Everything sold above its estimate. There were a lot of people interested in the smaller lots.”
On the day that England played in the World Cup in Russia, 1966 World Cup winning manager Sir Alf’s memorabilia brought a packed crowd to the auction, and internet bidding too.
Top price of £3,600 was paid for a silver and enamel salver, which had been presented to Sir Alf Ramsey by the FA to mark his 100th game in charge of the England team, against Wales in November 1972.
Ipswich Town FC bought lot 221, a silver salver presented to Mr and Mrs Ramsey by the ITFC supporters association to mark his achievements in 1960-61.
Mr Foster said there had been competitive bidding for the smaller items too, all relating to Alf.
“It was very nice to be doing it, with such a full room, and to see such interest in Sir Alf and Ipswich Town,” he said.
Among the smaller items were Mexican (silver) knapkin rings, monogramme AR, which went for £110.
