The newly-published 2015 edition of the guide includes, for the first time, a Top 50 listing for pubs, alongside the established ranking of the nation’s best restaurants, which was introduced six years ago.

Among those in the pubs listing are the British Larder, at Bromeswell, near Woodbridge, in 23rd position, and the Bildeston Crown, in Bildeston, near Hadleigh, in 37th.

Two Norfolk pubs also make the listing, the Gunton Arms at Thorpe Market, in seventh place, and the White Horse at Brancaster Staithe, 50th.

Top spot goes to the Freemasons at Wiswell in Lancashire, which is also the first pub to achieve a score of seven in the guide’s rating system ? enough for it to be included in the main Top 50 listing for restaurants, in 41st place.

In second place in the pubs listing, and 43rd in the main list, is Tom Kerridge’s Hand & Flowers in Buckinghamshire.

The top three restaurants in the main listing all achieved a 10 of 10 rating, the first time in 15 years that so many have achieve the maximum score.

Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume, in Cumbria, tops the restaurant list for the second year running, Heston Blumenthal’s the Fat Duck, in Berkshire, retains second spot, and the Restaurant Gordon Ramsey, in London, rises from fith last year to third.

Clare Smyth, chef/proprietor at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, is also the first female chef in 15 years to be awarded a perfect 10 score.

Elizabeth Carter, consultant editor of the Good Food Guide, which is now in its 64th year and is sponsored by Waitrose, said: “In 2008, the Good Food Guide started listing the top restaurants in the UK in order of merit. Now firmly established, a placing in the top 50 is greatly coveted by chefs and restaurateurs.

“Building on this, for the 2015 edition of the guide we have listed our top 50 pubs in order of merit, in recognition of the importance pubs play in the current dining-out scene. And to my delight, the list coincides with the award of a score seven to a pub for the very first time.

“The Freemasons at Wiswell is a role model of its kind, a consistent and likeable country pub with no pretensions or gimmicks, just first-class food and knowledgeable, welcoming service.”

She added: ““After a break of a decade, Gordon Ramsay’s Chelsea flagship has once again been awarded a perfect 10. Now the domain of Clare Smyth, with support from what is, without doubt, one of the best front-of-house teams in the UK, this most impressive of London’s premier restaurants is back in that elite club.

“With her brilliantly artistic, elegant, modern French cooking she perfectly complements the witty, cerebral Fat Duck and the sensual farm-to-table delights of L’Enclume at the pinnacle of our Top 50 list.”

The Top 50 rankings are based on a combination of the establishment’s score in the guide, anonymous inspector visits and feedback from the guide’s readers. Regional winners, nominated by readers, will be announced next week.
