A community-owned pub near Ipswich has been awarded grant funding under the Business Energy Efficiency (BEE) Anglia project.

The Brook Inn at Washbrook, which was bought predominantly by local shareholders from the joint parish of Copdock and Washbrook in 2014, is to receive £2,500 towards the cost of cavity wall and roof insulation plus window and door double-glazing.

Energy savings from the project should amount to the equivalent of nine tonnes of CO2 per year, with cost savings of £1,700 helping to protect the business as well as the environment.

BEE Anglia is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and is being delivered through a partnership of Suffolk County Council, Norfolk County Council, Groundwork and NWES. It aims to help businesses reduce carbon and save money through a mix of advice, funding and recognition for their efforts.

Ian Evans, a director at the Brook Inn, said: “We expect to save around 20-25% on our energy bills following grant funding from BEE Anglia. Thanks on behalf of directors, shareholders and customers of the Brook Inn who will benefit greatly from this work.”

Matthew Hicks, Suffolk County Council cabinet member for environment and public protection, added: “I am delighted that we have been able to support the Brook Inn to enhance their sustainability, both economically and environmentally. The independent audits have given them the assurance that these savings will be achieved.”
