BURY St Edmunds brewer Greene King is celebrating after winning two awards recognising its commitment to the prevention of accidents and ill health.

The brewer has been awarded a Gold Medal for Occupational Health and Safety from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), and a Management of Road Risk (MORR) Gold Award.

The Gold Medal recognises the company’s haul of eight consecutive Occupational Health and Safety gold awards, while the MORR award recognises Greene King’s commitment to keeping staff safe on the road, including delivery drivers and members of the sales team.

Peter Ebbens, health and safety manager for Greene King Brewing and Brands, said: “We are immensely proud of our health and safety record and have very stringent procedures in place to ensure that the working environment at all sites is as safe as possible.

“Being recognised by one of the leading societies in health and safety is a fantastic achievement and everyone at the brewery contributes to making Greene King a very safe place to work. All of our employees should be commended for following our health and safety guidelines and procedures closely and we are delighted that RoSPA has recognised our efforts.”

Greene King’s performance was assessed in a number of key areas, including its overarching health and safety management systems, practices, expertise and leadership as well as workforce involvement.

David Rawlins, awards manager, RoSPA, said: “The RoSPA Awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention.

“We congratulate Greene King on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.”

Greene King’s commitment to health and safety management at its operations in Bury St Edmunds, as well as two other distribution sites, was also recognised recently with three separate International Safety Awards from the British Safety Council.
