Country Land and Business Association (CLA) East communications manager Lee Murphy has raised £1,250 after taking on a Cancer Research UK golf challenge.

Lee, whose wife was diagnosed with bowel cancer in May this year at the age of just 39, completed The Great Golf Challenge - 72 holes of golf (four rounds) in one day at The Notleys Golf Club in Essex.

Setting off at 5.30am and completing the task just before 8.30pm it is estimated that Lee covered more than 20 miles during the day. He was joined on the course at various points by friends and family and by CLA East Regional Director Ben Underwood.

“It has been a tough few months for my wife Caroline and our family but I am delighted that she is now making what should be a full recovery,” he said.

“To recognise the difficult time we have been through I initially wanted to do a skydive but my parents thought the family had been through enough worry for the year.

“The standard of my golf left a bit to be desired but I completed the four rounds in 367 shots which for me isn’t bad at all. My calves are pretty sore now though.

“Caroline and I have been blown away by the support and generosity of those who have donated to this challenge. It means so much to us.”
