A FORMER chief executive of the Ipswich Building Society has died at the age of 82.

Ryan Coe served as chief executive at the society from from 1979 until 1988, a period which saw a major expansion of its branch network around Suffolk in addition to its established presence in Ipswich.

After standing down as chief executive, Mr Coe remained with the society as a non-executive director until finally retiring in 1999.

Paul Winter, the society’s current chief executive, said yesterday: “Ryan appointed me to the role of assistant general manager in 1982 and he demonstrated to me the vital role a local building society has in its community.

“Ryan was largely responsible for the development of the society’s branch network and recognised the value of public relations in promoting the society’s name.”

A requiem mass will be held at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Hadleigh at 10.30am on Friday, February 4, followed by a private cremation.

Relatives have requested family flowers only but donations payable to The Samaritans may be send c/o R Gwinnell & Sons, 77 High Street, Hadleigh, IP7 5DY.
