TRUCKERS were told not to travel today after gusts of wind up to 70mph forced the closure of Britain’s top port.
Officials at the Port of Felixstowe said the container terminal was expected to be closed for the rest of the day – the second major closure of the quay and yard operations this week.
High-rise ship-to-shore cranes cannot operate once wind speeds are above 45mph, the maximum speed for safe operations.
“Weather forecasts suggest that disruption will continue into the afternoon with gusts in excess of 60mph,” said a spokesman.
Bookings for lorries have been removed on both Trinity Terminal and the new deepwater berths until at least 7pm.
Truckers have been advised not to travel to the port – those that do arrive will be put into holding areas at the terminal. Operation Stack has not been put in place.
