East Anglian pig farmer Peter Mortimer, who last week celebrated his 40th year of competition at the Suffolk Show with yet another supreme championship, has added to his haul of honours by taking prizes in the Pig and Poultry Marketing Awards at London's Haymarket Hotel.
Mr Mortimer, of Fir Tree Farm, Metfield, near Harleston, was runner-up for the national pig producer of the year title and was also runner-up in the “Cut Above” meat quality award, for a cut of belly pork.
Mr Mortimer, who runs about 240 sows, has started selling more pork to local butchers, first competed at the Suffolk Show in 1970 and last week won the supreme championship with a single bacon pig. It was later auctioned by David Ball, of the Norwich Livestock Market, for 350 to C & K Meats, which has just opened a new shop in Diss.
