MEP is backing Bury St Edmunds to continue as a Fairtrade town at an event on Friday July 6.

Suffolk Euro MP Alex Mayer will back Bury St Edmunds to win a third successful bid as a designated Fairtrade Town on Friday July 6 at an event at Just Traid, St John’s Centre in St John’s Street.

The MEP will meet with Richard Stainer from the Bury St Edmunds Fairtrade Town Partnership and Suffolk Association of Fairtrade Towns, who revealed that since their first bid the town now has more than 25 Fairtrade certified shops, restaurants and cafés.

Bury St Edmunds won Fairtrade status in summer 2016, and the town has to collect evidence each year maintain it.

The Fairtrade economy is now worth an estimated £2.25m to Suffolk.

This year has been so successful that Bury St Edmund’s Fairtrade Town Partnership have now put together a directory of Fairtrade eateries and shops to help residents and visitors know where they can purchase ethically sourced goods.

Alex Mayer MEP, who is a member of the European Parliament’s Fairtrade cross party group said: “Well done to all involved for making this Bury St Edmunds’ most successful year as a Fairtrade Town.

“Bury St Edmunds shoppers can now buy the biggest range of Fairtrade groceries, sweet treats and household items that they ever have been able to, knowing that the producers have been paid a fair price for their work.”
