DELSTAR Engineering, based in Haverhill, has become one of the first companies to sign up a sponsored learner from West Suffolk College.

Andrew Jarrett, 20, from Woodbridge is being sponsored by Delstar while completing a full-time PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) course.

The firm will pay 250 to cover his personal protective equipment, overalls and books as well as offering a number of work experience days, tailored around his curriculum, and continued support throughout the year.

The sponsorship is part of a ground-breaking initiative between West Suffolk College and local employers.

Adam Golding, Delstar general manager, said: “We saw this as a positive step forward after the government scrapped the Young Apprenticeship scheme. We are keen to support the college in this new initiative to maintain quality students, suitable for future skilled employment.”
