A 65-YEAR-OLD who carved out a career as a carpenter has celebrated half a century with the same firm.
John Lawrence, who joined Hutton Construction at the age of 15, says he is not ready to hang up his chisel just yet, although he has now changed to a more flexible working week.
“It has always been a great place to work with wonderful people,” he said. “I hope to continue working here for as long as possible.”
He was picked up with wife Elsie from their home in Tiptree and taken in a Rolls Royce laid on by the firm to Hutton's offices in Birch for a celebration attended by present and former work colleagues.
He was presented with a gold carriage clock and a cheque for £500.
Joint managing director Mike Newton said: “He is a great person to have working for us and we are delighted to celebrate with him.”
