Ground has been broken on a £420,000 project to upgrade facilities at the RSPCA Animal Centre at Martlesham.
The work to replace six kennels and provide new facilities for animals, volunteers, staff and visitors is being carried out by RG Carter.
The project will include new drainage and extra car parking plus the refitting of the old staff room into a grooming room with new equipment and fittings.
More than £300,000 has been raised in grants, donations and legacies by the charity, with the remainder to be collected through collections and events.
Honarary branch chairman Jean Short said the works had been named Project Winston, after a Newfoundland dog who was rehomed through the centre.
RG Carter’s works manager Paul Segger said: “It’s great to be able to provide the charity with a new updated environment, matching its vision to deliver the best animal-welfare services across the region.”
The centre will be running on an appointment-only basis until the new kennels are finished in October.
