St Edmundsbury cathedral is set to host a Plough Sunday celebration on Sunday, January 7.

Andrew Blenkiron, estate director at the Euston Estate near Thetford, will be bringing a working tractor and plough to the service, which takes place at 3.30pm, to be blessed.

A special anthem written by James Thomas will be sung by the choir.

“Plough Sunday is a very old tradition harking back to when the ground was first broken by the plough, to begin the work leading up to next year’s harvest and asking God’s blessing on the work to be undertaken,” said diocesan agricultural chaplain Canon Sally Fogden.

“This service reminds us all that we are a rural county and the vital role agriculture plays in it.”

Several years ago, the Reverend Fogden asked for the tradition, which is thought to date back to medieval times in the town, to be revived at the cathedral and it has continued since.
