A ONE-MAN brewery is celebrating as one of its favourite tipples has had success at a national beer tasting competition.

Bartrams Brewery’s extravagantly-named ‘Comrade Bill Bartrams Egalitarian Anti Imperialist Soviet Stout’ was named as best stout in the country at the National Winter Ales Festival.

Punters can be seen drinking the 6.9% pint in establishments throughout Suffolk and now in the Stowmarket pub, The Kings Arms.

Marc Bartram, 56, set up the brewery, based on the Rougham Estate, near Bury St Edmunds, 14 years ago. He said: “I went into the competition with no expectations at all.

“I was shocked when the name was read out but now I want to sell lots of beer. It’s nice to achieve it – it was a great honour.

“The difficulty I have got now is that everyone wants the stout and I have to continue with my existing customers.”

He describes the stout, which he has been brewing for six years, as “strong and full-bodied”.

At the festival the drink was also named as second best overall beer in the country.
