SOUTHWOLD-based brewer and leisure retailer Adnams has won the Corporate Social Responsibility category at this year's National Business Awards, sponsored by Orange.

Adnams scooped the title at a glittering ceremony at London's Grosvenor House Hotel, hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald in front of 1,200 business leaders, VIPs and press.

The company is best known for its range of beers, including Adnams Bitter, Broadside and Explorer, which are now sold in pubs and supermarkets nationwide, but also operates its own pub estate, the Swan and Crown hotels in Southwold, the Cellar & Kitchen Store retail chain and a wine business.

Adnams views CSR as a way of doing business rather than a series of initiatives.

Placing emphasis on good community relations, it founded the Adnams Charity to celebrate its centenary anniversary and endeavours to aid its community wherever possible. Initiatives include supporting the local high school, donating to charities in the area and helping cleaning Southwold beach.

Other steps taken include building a new distribution facility on the outskirts of the town, built to the highest environmental specifications, and has also designed a new lightweight bottle which will further reduce the firm's carbon emissions by 415 tonnes per year.
