Poster Punch horses given names to reflect poignant war anniversary

Organisers of the show launched a contest to name the poster mother-and-foal Suffolk Punches and the winning entry reflected the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I this year, a major theme at the event.

The lucky winner was Judith Pearce from Mersea Island, whose entry was chosen from 57 contenders judged by a Suffolk Show committee.

She was presented with a family ticket and free car pass to this year’s Suffolk Show, which takes place at Trinity Park in Ipswich on May 30 and 31.

“I’m thrilled,” she said. “My son and I have visited the World War One battle ground of Ypres and the museum of Passchendaele in Belgium and, as a horse owner, I thought it so important to remember the eight million horses, as well as the millions of people, who gave their lives 100 years ago.”

Suffolk Show director Bee Kemball congratulated Judith and thanked everyone who had taken part for their inspiring suggestions.

“It was great to see so many people get involved and join us in showing support for the Suffolk Punch horse,” she said.

“World War One is a key theme for the Suffolk Show this year, with a new display area recognising 100 years since the end of the War. We’re also proud to be supporting the Suffolk Punch breed with a new Heavy Horse area and Suffolk Punch live demonstration area where show visitors can learn more about the majestic breed up close.”

The breed was chosen as the star of this year’s Suffolk Show, in a bid to boost awareness of it. The Suffolk Punch is Britain’s oldest native horse, with a strong and hard-working history in ploughing fields and pulling heavy carts, but numbers are in rapid decline.
