What a month YFC has had! The members have been out and about and having what I can honestly say has been our most amazing month of our lives, writes Suffolk county organiser Tory Lugsden.

Show season is a fantastic time every year and is our favourite month for socialising and meeting members old and new. This year has been no exception, in fact I would say it has been the highlight of my career. We started with a fantastic stand at a blustery South Suffolk Show and then took the YFC roadshow to the Hadleigh Show. This year the Tug of War competition was fiercely contended between four senior clubs with Hadleigh’s tough boys taking the win in the senior competition and Gipping Valley in the juniors.

Suffolk Show this year was the most incredible two days and we are indebted to the Suffolk Agricultural Association for giving us such a huge part to play in their showcase event. We, once again, took the tough Tug of War boys into the ring for a second battle of the tug of war teams with Bury St Edmunds, Debenham, Hadleigh and Stowmarket fighting out for glory. This time at least Bury weren’t a whole man overweight but unfortunately Debenham hadn’t eaten enough and were still pulling 100kg under the weight limit. Hadleigh’s boys once again took the win and Gipping Valley’s teamwork paid off for the junior trophy.

Wednesday evening of the show saw the inaugural Mascot Race and “Supermoo” under the legs of Rob Duchesne of Bury St Edmunds YFC was given strict instructions to take the title. After the first heat Supermoo came back after trotting in in second place and asked if it was ok to try in the finals. A resounding “don’t just try, win” order was given and win he did. Supermoo blazed to victory and YFC supporters celebrated in true Young Farmers style. No pressure for next year….Thursday was the most amazing day for a number of our members having been invited to meet HRH Prince Harry to discuss the work we did for the forageaid appeal for the flooded farmers of Somerset. It was the most incredible honour to be invited and His Royal Highness was a delight. It was the proudest moment in my time as county organiser to have the chance to discuss the amazing skills shown by Young Farmers in pulling together to support other farmers and talk about opportunities available to young people from rural areas we can offer. Our request for a “selfie” was unfortunately politely declined due to our prize of £5 being too cheap!

The final week of May finished off with Stowmarket YFC’s annual reunion party and what a finish it was. The club raised £10,000 for RABI and St Elizabeth’s Hospice and would like to thank all of their supporters, those who so kindly donated prizes and sponsorship, and its members, for a fantastic evening.

The fun doesn’t stop with our Annual Rally taking place on June 14 with contests including the first ever Mr Suffolk YFC competition. The evening will be finished off with a party featuring Radio 1’s Comedy Dave. Our final bash of the year will be our County Ball and Awards Dinner on July 4 at Suffolk Food Hall. Tickets are £37.50.
