Mural about the life and times of Ipswich Airport revealed inside building society office.

Today was a day of celebration, marking ten years of Ipswich Building Society’s Ravenswood branch.

During the day Jo Leah, general manager (retail and distribution), Samantha Bak, customer experience manager and Trevor Slater, finance director of Ipswich Building Society unveiled a mural to celebrate ten years at Ipswich Building Society’s Ravenswood branch, a mural which commemorates the history of the Ipswich Airport on the eastern side of Ipswich.

The area has now been developed for hundreds of homes, for leisure, health services and commercial uses including shops, and the building society.

The mural was painted by Clare Shaw, a customer experience team leader at the Society’s Woodbridge and Aldeburgh branches who gained a degree in Illustration from Portsmouth University, is inspired by the former Ipswich Airport where the Ravenswood branch is located. It celebrates the timeline and history of the airport, which was operational from 1930 until 1997 and hosted various aircraft used in World War II, including Blenheim light bombers, Spitfires and Auster observation planes.

The new mural complements a full wall painting by the late J Brian Jepson, a local architect and artist, within the branch’s banking hall.

Richard Norrington, Chief Executive, said: “We’re excited to celebrate ten years of face-to-face customer service at our Ravenswood branch. Our branch network plays an important role in our offer and we are committed to their continuing success. The feedback we have received from our members indicates there is very much still a place for our over the counter services.

“Our new mural is a brilliant tribute to the history of Ravenswood and we’re very proud to have it on display in our branch.”
