Work to construct an Innovation Centre at the University of Essex with room to house up to 50 businesses has reached a milestone stage with the completion of the steel frame of the building.

The £12m project, on the University’s Knowledge Gateway research and technology park in Colchester, hopes to drive growth in the north of Essex and has received financial backing from both Essex County Council (ECC) and the South East Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Growth Fund.

Building work is being overseen by Kier Construction Eastern who plan to complete the scheme by early in 2019.

Stakeholders visited the site yesterday to view the progress including ECC’s deputy leader, Kevin Bentley, who said: “Colchester is recognised as a place where digital businesses cluster and the centre will support further expansion of this sector.”
