Bystanders save driver from burning car

POLICE have praised the bravery of bystanders who saved the life of a driver trapped inside his burning car following a crash in Essex.

POLICE have praised the bravery of bystanders who saved the life of a driver trapped inside his burning car following a crash in Essex.

The 21-year-old man was driving a silver MG ZR in Ramsden Bellhouse when it left the road and collided with a telegraph pole.

Onlookers rushed to help the man who was trapped as the vehicle caught fire, managing to free him and pull him to safety before the fire took hold.

The driver, from Wickford, was taken to Basildon Hospital by ambulance with serious head and internal injuries. His condition is described as critical but stable.

Nearby houses were evacuated while the fire was brought under control and the street was without electricity for a couple of hours.

Police closed the road for five hours while the incident and investigation were on going.
