A ceremony has been held to mark the start of construction work on a new marine science headquarters for the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) based in Lowestoft.
Cefas is an agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) which carries out research and marine monitoring. It has been based in Lowestoft since 1902, when it began as a small fisheries laboratory and today employs some 600 staff between Lowestoft and several other smaller bases.
Cefas CEO Tom Karsten said: “Cefas has played a leading role in the UK and Lowestoft’s marine history over the past 116 years. The renewal of our Lowestoft Headquarters represents an important chapter in this history.”
The new building is scheduled for completion by May 2020.
