A TEAM of ladies from a Suffolk branch of the Women's Institute have failed in their bid to win through to the semi-finals of famous television quiz University Challenge.

The team, from the Ipswich-based Suffolk East Federation Women's Institute, fought their way to the final eight of the series, which is currently screening a professionals version.

But last night , they met their match in a team from the Royal Meteorological Society, who prevailed 180-125 in a tense affair.

The WI team was captained by Wendy Robinson and also featured Jenny Wilkinson, Jenny Pearson and Enid Bazire.

The foursome had established an early 40-point lead in the showdown, but were no match for their opponents in the later stages of the contest.

Quizmaster Jeremy Paxman told the WI team they had run their conquerors much closer than the score suggested, and thanked them for taking part.
