A train was held at a station while police officers searched the carriages.
British Transport Police boarded the train at Chelmsford station at around 2pm following reports of a theft between Liverpool Street and Norwich.
A spokesman said: “The train was held at Chelmsford for a short period whilst officers attended and arrested a man on suspicion of attempted theft.
“The man was removed from the train and taken into custody for questioning.”
