A busy flyover in and out of a city centre will be closed for 21 days to allow roadworks to take place amid fears it is structurally unsafe.
Following works undertaken in April, maintenance will be carried out on the parapet connections and main traffic control and sign system at the Army and Navy flyover in Chelmsford.
There have been claims the flyover - which was only meant to be temporary when it was built in 1978 - is structurally unsafe.
It will be fully closed for 24 hours a day in both directions from 9pm on Monday, July 23 until Monday, August 13, when it is expected to reopen at 6am.
The flyover will remain closed during the daytime to allow engineering works to take place over the central roundabout and to allow time for materials to cure.
Works will take place at night over the carriageway supported by temporary lane restrictions.
In addition, a partial roundabout closure will be necessary for approximately three consecutive nights during the works.
Drivers will be required to use local alternative routes and signed diversions which will be in place during these periods.
Access to subways will remain open and staff will be on site where necessary to guide pedestrians.
A statement from Essex Highways urged all users of the roundabout to take additional care during the works, allowing extra time, observing signage and traffic management in place.
