BRITAIN's most prolific church burglar was caught by a text message as he raided a Suffolk church, police said.

Christopher Coulthard, who was jailed in 2003 for stealing from more than 500 churches, was spotted by a builder who received a police text message appealing for information about a suspected burglar.

Coulthard, 43, admitted a string of further offences following his arrest shortly after stealing about £5 from the church in Santon Downham, near Brandon, earlier this month.

The vital text message was sent as part of the Suffolk force's Police Direct scheme in the west of the county, which sends crime information and advice to registered users by voice, text or email messages.
