Third air frost in a month hits region, but will tonight be warmer?

Temperatures at Santon Downham, near Bury St Edmunds, fell to -0.9C early today. This was the third air frost in September, and came a day after the coldest September night for 15 years, with a temperature of -2C recorded.

Dan Holley, a forecaster at Norwich-based Weatherquest, said on Twitter: “Since 1981, we’ve only had two other years that have produced three September air frosts - 1986 and 2003.”

However, Weatherquest said it was not likely there would be another air frost tonight. Forecaster Chris Bell said: “It’s going to be a bit breezier and a bit less cold.”

He predicted West Suffolk could see night temperatures of around 3 or 4C, while in the east of the region it would be a little warmer at around 5 or 6C.

Despite the cold nights, it has been a nice and sunny weekend but we can expect temperatures to drop and the clouds to come in as we head into next month.

The rest of Sunday is looking pretty decent with spots of sunshine breaking through across the region.

Sadly the above average daytime temperatures of 18-19C will give way to some cloud later in the afternoon with spots of rains in some westerly areas.

Unfortunately things won’t be much better on Monday as we head into the first week of October.

Northern and eastern parts of Suffolk will be visited by showers with temperatures scraping the 12-13C mark. Western areas should stay dry.

Things will start to hot up with temperatures back around 18-19C from Tuesday to Thursday.

It will be cloudier but bright spots of sunshine are likely to break through for the most part.

The week will end with a slight downer as the region is visited by yet more showers.
