A RESPECTED astronomer has welcomed a decision to refuse planning permission for a turbine close to his observatory.

Tom Boles, a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and director of Coddenham Observatory, said the proposed single turbine at Coddenham Hall Farm would affect his telescopes, which search deep space for supernova. Mid Suffolk District Council’s planning committee met yesterday to discuss the application, made by Hilary Magnall.

Officers had recommended that the committee approve the plans, but members voted unanimously to refuse permission.

Mr Boles said: “We had a great morning – we won the day and it was unanimous.”

Tim Passmore, council leader and Coddenham ward member, said he was particularly pleased that the committee refused permission, saying there was “not a full enough understanding” of the astronomical facility.

He said: “The committee felt that there was not enough evidence to show the lack of impact the turbine would have on the area and also to the observatory.

“When we have world class facilities like the observatory, it is important that we look after them and I was delighted that everybody on the committee recognised that.”
