More than 1,000 women braved stifling heat to complete a charity fun run raising nearly £100,000 to help "beat cancer".

Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life yesterday saw an estimated 1,250 entrants, many dressed in pink, complete a 5km route around Colchester’s Castle Park.

Event manager Megan Bailey said it was a “really brilliant day” with lots of friends and family groups “braving the heat” to take part.

“It was lovely to see and a real testament to the Race for Life spirit,” she added.

Ms Bailey said the total tally raised was expected to break £94,000, which will be used to fund pioneering research in the fight against cancer. “We just want to say a big thank you to everyone for their amazing achievements,” she added. “These wonderful people have helped bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”
