A man who fled from a two-vehicle collision in Colchester last night was caught by bystanders and brought back to the scene of the crash before being arrested for drink driving.

Police were called to reports of the crash involving a silver Ford Mondeo and a Hyundai ix20 in Magdalen Street at around 10.30pm.

No injuries were reported but the driver of the Hyundai fled the scene before officers arrived, an Essex Police spokesman said.

But the force spokesman praised members of the public who managed to detain the man and bring him back to the scene of the accident.

Officers then arrested him for drink driving.

The road remains closed in both directions at the junction between Wimpole Road and Military Road to allow recovery of the vehicles.

The force spokesman said a building was hit in the accident and will require a structural engineer to assess the damage.
