A woman in her 20s is in hospital after firefighters cut her free from the wreckage of a serious crash on Christmas Day in north-east Essex.

Emergency services were called to reports of a two-vehicle collision in Brightlingsea Road, Elmstead, near Colchester, at around 5.20pm yesterday.

Fire crews were forced to use specialist cutting equipment to remove the roof of one of the vehicles involved in order to free the trapped woman, understood to be in her 20s.

She was rescued by 6.55pm, a spokesman for the Essex County and Fire Rescue Service said.

She sustained “serious” injuries not thought to be life-threatening and was taken to Colchester General Hospital, an East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said.

She added a total of four people were treated at the scene by paramedics.
