A man was arrested and a woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a road incident in the early hours of this morning.

Police, fire crews and paramedics received reports of a single-vehicle collision on Mersea Road, Colchester, at around 12.10am.

Firefighters were forced to cut free a woman trapped in a Renault Clio that had left the road and is understood to have crashed in to a lamppost.

She was taken to hospital after sustaining “serious injuries”, an Essex Police spokesman said this morning.

An East of England Ambulance Service (EEAS) spokesman said the woman suffered back injuries after the car drove in to a lamppost.

A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of motoring offences. He was also taken to hospital “for treatment to injuries,” the force spokesman added.

The EEAS spokesman added the man sustained facial injuries not thought to be serious.

Mersea Road remained open but officers closed School Lane to launch an investigation before the road reopened at around 8.50am.

Witnesses are urged to come forward. Call Essex Police on 101.
