Colchester’s MP paid a visit to a mental health unit in the town to see how it helps patients.

Will Quince met with senior managers at The Lakes, in Turner Road, before having a tour of Ardleigh Ward and Gosfield Ward.

Mr Quince was told about how the unit, run by the Essex Partnership University Trust, is employing a new bed occupancy strategy, aimed at ensuring patients do not spend more time in hospital beds than is necessary.

He was also told about how patients are treated in their homes and the work of specialists to ensure patients have the best treatments and care plans.

Gareth Walton, clinical manager, spoke about the work of the Home Treatment Team which plays a vital role in treating patients in their own homes as and when required. The team is made up of doctors, nurses and several other specialists who work together to find the best treatment and care plans for their patients.

Mr Quince said: “I would like to thank the trust for kindly sparing the time to talk to me about their work and plans for the future. Tackling poor mental health must be a priority and I am pleased ministers have legislated to treat it with the same importance as physical health.”
