AN ESSEX police officer has been temporarily suspended from driving a police vehicle following an internal investigation into a road crash.

Pc Jamie Horton, 33, had previously been found guilty of driving without due care and attention following the accident in Barrack Street, Colchester, on February 18.

He admitted the charge at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on August 23 and was ordered to pay a 133 fine, a 15 victim surcharge and 85 in costs.

The court heard how the officer’s marked Ford Focus police estate car was in collision with a Mazda MX5 near the junction with Victor Road while responding to an emergency.

No-one was seriously injured in the incident but the impact caused the sports car to smash through a brick wall and into the corner of a house. Witnesses said the Mazda was turning right into Victor Road.

Essex Police launched an internal investigation into the incident.

Yesterday a force spokesman said Pc Horton would be suspended from driving a police vehicle until successful completion of his re-training. He has also received points on his driving permit.
