White rhino Flossy, who was described by the zoo as ‘a much-loved friend’, has died.

Flossy, who had been a resident at Colchester Zoo for 46 years, had been receiving treatment for a skin condition over the last 12 months.

The condition, which appeared as weeping growths, had been kept under control and managed by keepers and the veterinary team but unfortunately Flossy’s condition spread.

Due to Flossy’s age, estimated at 49-years-old, she also had arthritis in her back legs which resulted in a noticeable deterioration of health over the last few weeks.

After a number of consultations with the veterinary team there was no further treatment that could be administered, therefore, with Flossy’s welfare and quality of life ahead in mind, the decision was made to put her to sleep.

Flossy first arrived at the park in April 1972, although she never mothered any young she played a very important role as a grandmother figure to a number of rhino calves.

A statement on Colchester Zoo’s Facebook page said: “Flossy had a very loving nature and loved to sunbathe and wallow in the paddock with her family of rhinos but also enjoyed the company of her fellow neighbours at Kingdom of the Wild including the zebra, giraffe and kudu.

“Flossy, had a very special bond with her keepers, some of which she had known for over 20years. Flossy will leave a big footprint on the hearts of her keepers along with those that have known and grown close to her over the years, she will always have a special place here at Colchester Zoo.”
