Compass Infrastructure UK began its life in 2011 with offices on the Lion Barn Industrial Estate in Needham Market (prior to this its predecessor NACAP had occupied the same building for almost 10 years). The local community is important to the company and with its staff greatly enjoy buying lunch from Alder Carr farm and spending their spare time in the Rampant Horse. Compass can also be working on the Needham Market football club grounds from time to time as well.

From this year you will see a lot more of Compass as the company was recently awarded a new contract with UK Power Networks to build customer connections in an area with approximately nine million inhabitants, including the whole of East Anglia. The company is committed to carrying out this work with the least possible disruption, so the company encourages people to get in contact with any complaints, compliments or feedback at any time.

But what is Compass?

Compass is an international managing contractor dealing with complex infrastructure in energy, communication and intelligent traffic systems. It deals with the whole process, from estimating and engineering through to execution and commissioning including fibre optic networks, such as the one installed for the Yorkshire town of Hessle which required installing a cable though the Humber Bridge.

In recent years in the UK, Compass has carried out many energy projects in the centre of London, such as the City of London connections, The Shard, 100 Bishopsgate, the O2 Arena, One Angel Court, St Bart’s Hospital and a prestigious and complex project in Cambridge and many other smaller projects. In the London Borough of Camden, the Torrington project involves connections to multiple hospitals, residential developments and HS2 and is expected to last for two years.

In the Netherlands, Compass also manages large projects for the Dutch road authority, including renovating signaling over 10 miles along the A16 near Rotterdam.

Core values

Compass stands for excellent safety, quality and commitment and believes delivering top quality is essential to long-term success. It gets its energy from being the best it can for its customers and challenging itself to improve daily. Compass wants to be amongst the leaders in environmentally-friendly enterprise.

• Safety: I work safely or I don’t work at all

• Quality: I say what I do and I do what I say

• Commitment: I contribute to the success of the project

Innovation

Innovation requires knowledge, mindset and experience. The right mind-set opens Compass up to embracing fresh ideas from young people and other sources, so it can keep an open mind about the world around it and work with academic institutions who can give it fresh insights and energy. This has resulted in the company working with Utrecht University, having students to help with LEAN analysis to improve its processes, being a partner in the Blue Battery project and developing its own fibre optic sensors.

Compass is situated at 7 Maitland Road, Lion Barn Industrial Estate Needham Market, Suffolk, IP6 8NZ.
