MOTORISTS faced long delays on the A140 tonight after a herd of cows blocked the road.
Around six adult cows strayed from a nearby field onto the carriageway at Brockford, near Mendlesham, causing up to six mile tailbacks.
The bizarre incident began at just before 5.15pm today when a motorist called the police to say there was a herd of cows standing on the verge.
Within 15 minutes traffic was bought to a standstill as the animals ventured onto the road, causing blockages in both directions.
A member of the public helped police officers to move the cows off the road and it was reopened at 6pm.
The cows have now been safely returned to their field, with the help of their owner.
