A near 30-mile police pursuit came to a dramatic end this morning as police officers used tactical contact to stop a speeding BMW in Woodbridge.

Officers from Essex Police attempted to pull over a silver BMW in Colchester near junction 28 of the A12 on Wednesday, March 27 at around 7am.

According to a police spokesman, the vehicle failed to stop and sped off, leading officers in a pursuit that carried them across the border into Suffolk.

The pursuit finally came to an end when police officers used ‘tactical contact’ to force the vehicle to stop on the roundabout at the junction of the A12, Grove Road, and the B1079, Grundisburgh Road, in Woodbridge.

A spokesman from Suffolk police said: “We were called shortly after 7.15am following reports that a motorist in a BMW had failed to stop for police in Essex.

“Officers assisted and pursued the vehicle north on the A12 from Copdock, Ipswich, until it subsequently collided with two vehicles – a Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Tiguan.”

No one was injured in the collision and a 21-year-old man from Enfield was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop and drug driving in connection with the crash.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

Motorists reported heavy traffic in the area while police officers worked at the scene of the collision, some reporting spending hours stuck in their car.

David Mortimer, Woodbridge town mayor, praised the police officers for their quick thinking.

He said: “The police receive second to none training to deal with situations like the one today.

“They are trained to make a decision in difficult circumstances.

“I know that the police think about using force very carefully because if they get it wrong they could lose their jobs or end up in court.”

Essex Police are appealing for information and dash-cam footage following the pursuit.

If you witnessed the collision or have any information that could assist officers in their investigation call the Stanway Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting incident 139 of March 27.
