A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of a woman's body in an Ipswich flat.

Police were called by the ambulance service to reports of a sudden death at a flat in Foundry Lane just before 3.30am on Thursday.

On arrival at the scene, officers found the body of the woman in her 60s inside the flat.

The death is currently being treated as suspicious.

A 55-year-old man from Ipswich has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

He has been taken to Martlesham police investigation centre for questioning.

The victim and suspect were known to each other, according to police.

John Cook, Ipswich Borough Councillor for Alexandra Ward, said: "I was saddened to hear this news today and my sympathies to the friends and family of the woman concerned.

"I am relieved to see the police have made an arrest and there appears to be no risk to the wider population and other residents in the area."

Tom Hunt, Ipswich MP, said: "Obviously it is very concerning news to hear and I imagine especially so for the people living close by the location.

"It is incredibly sad news to hear somebody has died and under suspicious circumstances. It's certainly not the sort of thing you want to be happening in the town and I'm sure there will be a full investigation.

"It always shakes a community when something like this happens and my thoughts are with the family of the victim."
