The inquest is due to be held today into the death of a man found trapped in a drain, in Bury St Edmunds.

Lee Carnegie, 49, died on May 9, and the hearing is being held at the Suffolk Coroner’s Court, in White House Road, Ipswich, this afternoon.

His death shocked and saddened the local community after several police units were called to reports of the fatality in Linnet Road.

Officers arrived to discover the body of Mr Carnegie in the front garden of a house – and it is understood he was pulled from the drain by residents in the street.

A woman, whose property overlooks the scene, said the man was trying to clear the drain which had been reported as being blocked.

She was passing the scene after collecting her children from Westgate Community Primary School, which is nearby at Brooklands Close, in Hospital Road, when he appearesd to have been overcome by the fumes.

Several police cars, as well as paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service, attended the scene and witnesses described seeing multiple emergency crews parked on Linnet Road, which was closed for around four hours while police carried out investigations.
