Debach: Roof destroyed after fire at house
FIREFIGHTERS saved a large three-storey house after a blaze took hold in the roof.
Crews were called around 4.30pm yesterday after neighbours spotted smoking coming from the house, off Woodbridge Road, in Debach.
A couple were in the house at the time but managed to escape and dial 999. About two thirds of the roof has been destroyed.
Group Commander Ian Bowell said: “The first crews that arrived managed to attack the fire and stop it spreading any further. They did an excellent job.
“The initial reaction in formulating a plan to tackle the fire meant the back-up crews were able to bring the fire under control.
“The roof and two second floor bedrooms have been damaged but it could have been a lot worse. A turn-table ladder and seven appliances were used.”
It is believed the couple are staying with relatives while work is carried out on the property.
