A parish council which has called for more parking in its village to ease congestion is opposing proposals to provide extra spaces.
At its meetings this year Debenham Parish Council has discussed erecting bollards to prevent nuisance motorists from parking where they want. But councillors have objected to plans for new parking in Chancery Lane as part of a new four-property development.
The developer has said the four parking spaces would be made available for drivers going to the nearby primary school.
Chairman Richard Blackwell said the loss of the existing employment site, on which the homes would be built, was a “major concern”.
He said: “It’s not that we object to the parking which is being dangled as a bit of a carrot; the existing site is a small industrial area and we do not want to see it disappear because of the local employment that it provides.
“I did not feel the development was worth supporting for the extra parking which would be welcome in Debenham. When there are about 100 cars round there [the primary school] the four spaces would not make a lot of difference.”
Headteacher Jane Taylor said “a lot of cars” were in roads around the school as children began and finished their day.
Gipping Homes is agent for the developer and its director, Peter Blemings, said the area was not a “sustainable employment site”.
The plans are due to be decided by Mid Suffolk District Council, which has the final decision, on Wednesday.
