DEMOLITION crews have moved in to clear the charred remains of a middle school destroyed in a blaze.

St Felix Middle School in Newmarket was gutted by the fire on August 5, which caused millions of pounds of damage.

Today the remains of the school began clearing the ruins in preparation for pupils returning on September 8 to temporary accommodation installed on playing fields.

The bulldozers are expected to be on site for four weeks clearing rubble but Suffolk County Council education bosses have pledged the temporary accommodation in a “St Felix Village” will be of the standard expected by pupils and staff.

- A 14-year-old is expected to appear at Bury St Edmunds magistrates' court tomorrow charged with deliberately starting the fire.
