Traffic chaos in Sudbury today after diversion signs positioned so they take motorists into roadworks.

THEY are meant to be signs which drivers can trust to take them around roadworks which would otherwise block their path.

But motorists in Sudbury have been cursing bungling officials who have placed diversion signs so they are taking them straight into a cordoned off road.

The incident surrounding a new water connection being installed on Newton Road this week<10.02> has been driving people mad.

It has caused pandemonium when large vans and trucks join backing up traffic in having to try and find space to turn around before having to go right through the town’s one way system again.

After the EADT contacted Suffolk County Council, the highways authority, about the problem yesterday<10.02> they promised to send someone out to re-position their signs.

Melvin Neal, 52, found the muck-up prolonged his journey to the Chilton Industrial Estate for Johnstons Leyland decorating centre, based in Colchester.

“It is madness,” he said. “I have to go all the way back again now. It should have taken me half an hour to do this and it has taken me nearly an hour.”
