The A14 is reported to be “disintegrating” in west Suffolk, with large lumps of tarmac strewn across the road surface, causing hazardous driving conditions.
Suffolk police said it had received several calls from motorists complaining about the state of the road in the westbound carriageway near Bury St Edmunds.
A force spokesman said told this newspaper on Saturday afternoon: “The tarmac is breaking up near to the exit for Tesco.
“We’ve had two or three calls from people saying there are large lumps of tarmac in the road.
“Highways have been called and they will need to come as soon as possible because it’s disintegrating quite badly.”
Police are advising people to take care when driving through the area, particularly as it gets darker this evening.
Highways England, which maintains the A14, yesterday appeared to suggest to this newspaper that they had been made aware of the issue suggested work could be carried out between 8pm on Saturday and 6am this morning.
However, the government-owned company told this newspaper this morning that they had not been made aware of the issue and that no work was carried out overnight.
