DRIVERS were being warned to take extra on the roads this morning as last night's snow turned to ice.

Intermittent snow showers were predicted to have bought up to 4cm in the worst affected areas, with some of it clearing before this morning as sleet fell.

But the remaining covering is set to be the last of the snow for now as a milder front pushes its way up from France in time for the weekend.

Gritters were out on the roads last night to lessen the impact of the wintry weather as temperatures plummeted down to freezing again.

But scenes reminiscent of overnight on Wednesday, where Suffolk police were called to 32 accidents in a 12 hour period, were likely as treacherous conditions developed on minor roads.

Emma Coombs, a forecaster at Weatherquest, said last night: “There is a chance of getting some accumulation on the ground - somewhere between 2-4 cms.

“I think as you go through the night there will be more precipitation to come but it will turn to sleet again later.

“There should be a bit of a covering by tomorrow morning.”

She said today will be a much brighter day after initial cloud clears away and it should remain dry, with temperatures climbing up to 4-5C. But another freezing night is on the cards, with thermometers expected to hit as low as -4C.
