PEOPLE woke up yesterday morning to a winter wonderland after a frost had spread throughout the region.
Icy conditions met motorists travelling into work and children arriving at school after temperatures had plummeted overnight to -6.4C (20.48F). Forecasters called it the “coldest night of the year” and said last night’s temperatures would reach a similar low.
Yesterday’s daytime temperatures remained chilly at about 0C (32F). Today’s forecast is for similar temperatures.
The frost, known as a hoar frost, is composed of tiny ice crystals and is formed when the temperature of the surface falls below freezing point. Chris Bell from Weatherquest said temperatures on Tuesday night dropped down between -4C (24.8F) and -7C (19.4F).
He said: “It will probably drop off below freezing and then there’s a change on the way. Friday morning there will be quite a lot of rain across the county. By the time we get to the weekend, temperatures will be between 7-8C (44.6F-46.4F).
“There will be windy conditions on Friday morning with gusts up to 50 miles an hour.”
The record low temperature on Tuesday night was recorded at Wattisham Airfield, near Needham Market.
